Southeastern Community College graduate and local Family Nurse Practitioner Peggy Newman will deliver the graduation speech at SCC’s commencement on Friday, May 12.

Newman began her educational journey at SCC, graduating with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1987. She continued her studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honors. She began her medical career as a registered nurse in the trauma and cardiovascular intensive care units. It was during her time in the Cardiovascular and Thoracic ICU at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis that Newman decided to further her education. She later graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner.

A native North Carolinian raised in Columbus County, Newman describes her degree from SCC as the foundation on which she was able to build her career and is thrilled to have the opportunity to address the graduates of the Class of 2017.

“We are excited to welcome Peggy back to SCC to share her message with our graduates,” said SCC President Dr. Anthony Clarke.

Newman is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and currently practices at Southeast Primary Care. She resides in Whiteville with her husband, Jim Newman. They have two adult children, Courtney and Anthony, and three grandchildren, Robert, Christopher and Zachary. The Newmans are members of Western Prong Baptist Church.

The SCC Commencement Exercises will be held Friday, May 12 at 9 a.m. on the front lawn of A Building.
