AmeriCorps Seniors/RSVP volunteers honored at annual holiday luncheon
AmeriCorps Seniors/Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, sponsored by Southeastern Community College, hosted its annual Holiday Volunteers Appreciation Luncheon at the Trinity Baptist Church fellowship hall on Dec. 2. With 91 volunteers in attendance and nine awards presented, the event honored the volunteers’ 3,000 hours of service performed this year in Columbus County.
“There are so many people out there who appreciate the work that you do,” SCC President Dr. Chris English told the crowded room. “It doesn’t go unrecognized because I see you on campus, and I see you out in the community. When I ask if that’s RSVP, most of the time, it is. Today is a recognition for you and thanks to you for the work that you do in our community.”
English explained that AmeriCorps Seniors/RSVP volunteers, since 1973, have visited or volunteered at more than 190 sites in Columbus County. He said that volunteerism inspires other seniors to get involved, stay active and engage with their community.
English presented a plaque award and gift to Jolene Lewis for the female RSVP volunteer with the most service hours, and he presented a plaque award and gift to Van Pierce for the male RSVP volunteer with the most volunteer hours. He also presented an award and gift to Retha Thompson for 29 years of volunteer service, the most years on record.
“Our college leadership appreciates and acknowledges all you do and all the ways you serve our community,” said Angie Ransom, SCC Associate Vice President of Education and Training and the Supervisor of RSVP. “It is our privilege to honor and dedicate this luncheon to you, the volunteers who dedicate many hours of service.”
Ransom recognized the volunteer site managers and advisory council members at the luncheon. She said their work and services keep SCC’s RSVP in compliance with its federal grant funding requirements. Ransom also recognized the Focus Committee that helps identify specific needs in the communities which RSVP may be able to impact in Columbus County.
Ransom called Albenny Burney, Shirley Foley, Annie Inman, Betsy McKee, Martha Watson and Amanda Worley to the podium to present framed certificates and gifts in recognition of their 25 years of volunteer service.
Columbus County Commissioner Barbara Featherson, a member of the RSVP advisory council, was present in support of the celebration.
The audience enjoyed musical renditions performed by Carol Caldwell and the Rev. Dr. Joseph Washburn. The luncheon consisted of barbecue, cubed steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, baked beans and hushpuppies catered by Joe’s Barbecue. Desserts consisted of three kinds of cookies and five kinds of cupcakes by Amazin Glazin Sweet Treats and four flavors of croissants and brownies by Darel’s Bakery and Sweets.
AmeriCorps Seniors/RSVP Interim Director Val Ellis and AmeriCorps Seniors/RSVP Administrative Assistant Dania Arellano-Herrera coordinated the luncheon event.
