AREA ECONOMIC PROFESSIONALS ASSEMBLE FOR OUR FUTURE CAPE FEAR COMMUNITY CONVENING
Southeastern Community College hosted the Our Future Cape Fear Community Convening on Oct. 18, when 45 people gathered from employers, schools, educational and training institutions from Columbus, Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties to learn about educational opportunities for young adults and adult learners.
Ruth High, center manager for the Columbus County NCWorks Career Center, said these young adults and adult learners have been historically excluded from attaining and completing post-secondary credentials, degrees and diplomas.
“The Our Future Cape Fear Education Attainment Network is charged with facilitating collaboration in local communities, expanding awareness of programs and solutions, promoting smart practice sharing and increasing support around a network of education attainment champions to help us better prepare our young adults and adult learners for training opportunities and the workforce,” High said.
High explained that there are more than 80 NCWorks Career Centers in the state. She assists people with finding jobs, responding to interview questions, connecting with resources and building resumes. High said that anyone of any age or employment status can visit the career center for assistance.
In addition to High, attendees heard from Lashauna Parker, Workforce Development Youth Program manager for the Cape Fear Council of Government; Randolph Keaton, executive director of Men and Women United for Youth; and Dylan Bowen, Columbus County Economic Development specialist.
“Anything we do at Southeastern where we partner with another organization produces powerful results,” said SCC Executive Vice President Dr. Sylvia Cox. “We are extremely grateful that NCWorks is on our campus because they are invaluable to our students and community.”
The goal of Our Future Cape Fear Community Convening is to promote the exchange of best practices, formulate strategies to enhance equitable attainment outcomes and provide professional development opportunities for people serving students.
