‘Killing it this year’ – SCC Student Government Association is ready to serve

The Student Government Association at Southeastern Community College serves as a catalyst for student voices in campus events and programming. Student Engagement Coordinator Katie Floyd oversees the SGA and serves as the staff advisor. The SGA serves as her “staff” for planning and setting up campus events for students.

“We meet every Friday at 2:30 to plan events and give me input on what the students want to see and participate in on campus,” Floyd said. “I have an awesome group this year because they’re always willing to help, communicating their ideas and being here for their office hours. They are killing it this year, and they have gotten lots of other students interested in SGA as well.”

Leading the SGA is fifth-year Columbus Career and College Academy senior Riley Benton. Benton completed his high school credits last year and is enrolled in all SCC classes this year. He plans to graduate high school this May with a high school diploma and two associates of applied science degrees in welding and building construction along several certificates and diplomas.

In addition to SGA President, Benton is a CCCA Ambassador, SCC Ambassador, SkillsUSA member and 12th grade student superintendent advisor. Benton represents the SCC student body at SCC Board of Trustee meetings and provides an update at each meeting.

“Outside of school, I am a volunteer firefighter and work two jobs,” Benton said. “After I graduate, my goal is to join the United States Marine Corps and finish my schooling at North Carolina State University.”

Caleb Ammons is second in command of the SGA and serves as vice president. Ammons is a senior at CCCA, was born and raised in Whiteville and is pursuing a degree in information technology at SCC. Ammons said he is driven by a long-standing passion for computers and technology.

“After graduation, my goal is to enter the workforce in the IT field,” Ammons said. “As an SGA member, I aim to become more actively involved in student activities and build meaningful connections across the campus.”

Trinity L. Fowler is a 17-year-old CCCA senior and serves as secretary of the SGA. In addition to her secretary duties, Fowler is a SkillsUSA officer and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. With most of her high school credits completed, Fowler is working on a degree in psychology with a focus on both clinical and forensic psychology.

While serving on SGA, Fowler aims to represent the student body, help organize events, address student needs and tackle any concerns or issues that arise.

“Personally, I view my time in SGA as an opportunity to build connections and scout for future opportunities,” Fowler said. “I am ambitious, and I value the relationships that come from being involved in organizations like SGA.”

Fowler said this will not be her last year serving on SGA as she plans to run for president next year. She views SGA as a highly beneficial organization, enjoys being a part of it and is excited to work with everyone to create a successful year.

Austin Powell, an SCC freshman, serves as SGA treasurer. He is a second-generation livestock farmer, a role that instilled the value of hard work and dedication to his goals.

“I was homeschooled from second grade through my senior year, graduating in 2024 with a 3.6 GPA,” Powell said. “During high school, I gained valuable experience working in customer service, on private farms and in lawn care.

Powell said he holds in highest regard his faith in God, family and his country. After graduation, he plans to attend N.C. State University to become a livestock veterinarian, start a family and leave a legacy for the people he loves.

Floyd anticipates increased SGA interest for the 2025/2026 academic year and plans to hold elections in fall 2025. For more information about SGA, contact Floyd at [email protected]
