A Fresh Start and a Lucky Win at Southeastern Community College

When Damian’s mom heard about the Adult Learner Open House at Southeastern Community College, she didn’t hesitate. She told her family, “We all need to go.” She had already registered for fall classes and wanted to make sure she was ready. But more importantly, she believed her husband and son would benefit too. And she was right.

Damian, his mother, and his father attended the event together. While Damian left with a brand-new iPad after winning the evening’s giveaway, the true reward was the opportunity and encouragement they all discovered.

SCC’s first Adult Learner Open House welcomed adults of all ages and backgrounds. Guests could apply for admission, register for classes, explore financial aid, and connect with campus support services. The event was designed for anyone looking to return to college, start fresh, or build a new career.

Damian’s mother is currently enrolled at SCC and will continue her classes this fall as she works to complete her associate degree. Inspired by her own experience growing up as an ESL student, she hopes to become an ESL teacher and support students facing similar challenges. She’s interested in completing SCC’s Teacher Preparation program and transferring to UNC Pembroke to earn her bachelor’s degree. She credits student counselor Jordan White for guiding her through the process and helping her feel confident about returning to school.

Her husband is exploring SCC’s new Electrical Lineman program, launching this fall. This program prepares students to build and maintain power line systems through hands-on training and safety instruction. It offers a fast, affordable path into a stable, high-demand career. For working adults with families, programs like this create real opportunities for growth without requiring them to put life on hold.

Damian is preparing to earn his High School Equivalency diploma through SCC’s Transitional Studies program. This pathway helps students gain the foundational education they need while also preparing for what comes next. Whether the goal is to enter the workforce, enroll in college, or pursue a training program, the HiSET equips students with the tools to move forward. At SCC, students can earn their high school credential and explore career-focused options at the same time!

Their story reflects the experience of many people in Columbus County. One in five adults in the area has some college credit but no degree and nearly 70 percent of adults between the ages of 25 and 44 are already working. SCC’s flexible evening and online programs are designed to meet students where they are and help them reach their goals at a pace that works for them!

Damian’s mom believed that one evening could help her family move forward. She was right. That visit to Southeastern marked the beginning of a new chapter for all three of them.
