High school summer campers meet HR directors at game day event

The quarter-annual HR Director’s Breakfast Meeting and high school summer camps joined forces on July 24 for a game day event on the Nesmith Student Center lawn. In lieu of a regular breakfast meeting, human resource directors from Southeastern Community College industry partners set up information booths, while high school campers participated in a cornhole tournament.

“We decided to turn this into a fun event with the students playing cornhole, Connect Four and Jenga and learning about career options with our local employers,” said Apprenticeship Specialist Chalisse Neely. “The construction class built the cornhole boards, and we enjoyed some Italian Ice.”

Industry partners present at the game day event were Shoreland Health Care and Retirement Center, Boys and Girls Homes of NC, Honeycutt Produce, Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Black’s Tire Service, Columbus County Social Services and Columbus County Health Department. Superintendents and CTE directors from Whiteville City Schools and Columbus County Schools met with students.

“This is a great opportunity for the high school students to learn about the careers at Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina,” said its senior director of human resources Amanda Formyduval. “Even though they aren’t old enough to work there now, it’s great for them to learn about the salary ranges, position requirements and what we do with not just high school students but with other adults as well.”

April Storms of Black’s Tire Service said she enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness from the students at the game day event. She said that Black’s Tire Service’s presence within the camp and college will plant a seed for students to pursue an automotive systems technology degree at SCC. Storms’ information booth displayed a QR code for the BTS apprenticeship program, an online application and an application for the general service/lube and tire technician program.

“This was a perfect way for Black’s Tire to interact with the students and get this younger generation excited about working,” Storms said.

According to Career and Technical Education Coordinator Ken Buck, the game day event was a “big success,” and he received good feedback from the industry partners. He said that its always “a great day when business and industry partners can meet with students.”

“This was another great opportunity for our HR directors to network with these high school students,” Buck said.
