Hyundai donates electric vehicle to SCC’s automotive program
Southeastern Community College’s Automotive Systems Technology program recently expanded its training resources with the donation of a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and related instructional equipment from Hyundai. The full-electric vehicle, along with a Hyundai scan tool and access to manufacturer service information, arrived on Aug. 9 and will support hands-on learning opportunities for students enrolled in the college’s electric vehicle courses.
The donation stemmed from a relationship established several years ago between SCC and Hyundai. According to Automotive Systems Technology Instructor Johnny O’Connell, the college began using Hyundai’s online learning management system about three years ago, giving students access to the same training and certifications provided to Hyundai dealership technicians.
“Students can complete all 54 modules, each having its own certification, to earn the overall Hyundai Service Technician Certification,” O’Connell explained. “Because we have regularly used the training over the past three years, we were chosen by Hyundai to receive a vehicle donation.”
O’Connell said Hyundai also donated access to manufacturer-specific service information, marking the first time the program has had direct access to a vehicle manufacturer’s service database.
“Hyundai Motor America is proud to support Southeastern Community College and its Automotive Systems Technology program through resources that bring today’s vehicle technology directly into the classroom and provide students with hands-on experience using the latest automotive and electric vehicle technologies,” said Michel Poirier, Vice President of After Sales & Customer Experience at Hyundai Motor America.
The donation included a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, scan tool and training access, as well as service information that can be integrated into the curriculum. According to Hyundai, these resources help prepare students to service today’s increasingly advanced vehicles while strengthening the pipeline of future technicians for Hyundai dealership partners nationwide.
“Trade school partnerships like this are essential to helping aspiring technicians build the hands-on skills and confidence they need to succeed in an evolving industry. We are fortunate to be able to donate a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, scan tool and training access, as well as service information, that can be integrated into the curriculum. These resources help prepare students to service today’s increasingly advanced vehicles while strengthening the pipeline of future technicians for Hyundai dealership partners nationwide,” said Poirier.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will serve as a primary training vehicle within SCC’s Electric Vehicle Certificate program. O’Connell said it is currently the only drivable electric vehicle available in the program, allowing students to gain practical experience performing maintenance and repairs while learning vehicle operation and charging procedures.
“This vehicle will be used in all of our electric vehicle program offerings,” O’Connell said. “Students will gain hands-on experience from using the vehicle in the lab to perform repairs and maintenance, and will learn how to charge the vehicle, along with how to operate the vehicle.”
In addition to the Hyundai Service Technician Certification modules, students will have access to specialized Hyundai training focused on the Ioniq 5. Students who complete SCC’s electric vehicle coursework will earn the college’s Electric Vehicle Certificate while gaining experience with current electric vehicle technology.
