‘Lifts them up’ – SCC Salon and Spa pamper cancer survivors and fighters for Pinktober
SCC’s cosmetology department kicked off its Pinktober event in celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer survivors and fighters received free shampoo, blowdry and styling services with the option of facial, manicure or pedicure services.
“For someone battling cancer and going through cancer treatments, so many emotions are through their mind,” said Eli Murillo, lead cosmetology instructor. “Everyone feels good when they are getting their hair done, getting a facial or getting their nails painted. It just lifts them up.”
Murillo said that one out of eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. She wants these women to feel pampered, and her students are receiving the necessary work experience hours for their state board examination. Cosmetology student Ashley Stocks said she felt good serving a client who survived Leukemia.
“She has been a client of mine before, but I called her to let her know this would be free today,” Stocks said.
Esthetician students started their Pinktober celebration on Tuesday, and they served five cancer survivors with facials. The event continues Thursday with free hair services and ends on Friday with nail services.
Nursing students collaborated with the cosmetology department and set up an information booth outside the salon. They provided information about early detection of breast cancer lumps and the next steps for treatment.
