Rams baseball sets the standard on and off the field

Southeastern Community College Rams baseball continues to hold student athletes to a high standard in the classroom, reinforcing the program’s commitment to success beyond the field. Head coach Coy Barnett said academics remain a priority within the program and are viewed as a key part of student development.

“Academic success is very important; these players are student athletes,” Barnett said. “The progress we make in the classroom pays larger dividends than anything we can do on the field.”

Barnett said expectations for academic performance are tied to a broader standard of excellence that shapes how players prepare and engage on a daily basis.

“I have a standard of excellence in everything we do. How we think, act, prepare and engage is all done with the standard in mind,” Barnett said.

That standard is reinforced through accountability and consistent involvement from the coaching staff. Barnett said regularly monitoring attendance and grades played a significant role in keeping players focused and responsible throughout the semester.

“I think expectations placed by the coaching staff led to the greatest success in the classroom,” Barnett said. “I routinely checked attendance and grades. When you are trying to earn a spot in the lineup, you stay accountable.”

Barnett said academic achievement helps shape adaptable individuals who are prepared to solve problems both in baseball and beyond.

“Success in the classroom shows initiative and adaptability,” Barnett said. “We need problem solvers on the field and in the workforce. Usually, the best players and athletes are very cerebral and their performance shows.”

Maintaining strong academic performance remains a priority for the program moving forward, with Barnett emphasizing the importance of meeting and exceeding academic benchmarks.

“Our goal is always to maintain over a 3.0,” Barnett said. “I think we should take great pride in having players on the All Region and All American Academic teams.”

Fans and supporters are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Rams this season. Home game tickets are $10, but students receive free admission with an SCC student ID.
