SCC honored at commissioners meeting with enrollment increase proclamation
The Columbus County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation in recognition of Southeastern Community College’s 37% enrollment increase over the last five years at its Aug. 18 meeting. Commissioner Ricky Bullard read the proclamation and presented it to SCC President Dr. Chris English.
“It was an honor to be able to receive that from the county commissioners and county manager in recognizing the hard work of our faculty and staff,” English said. “It’s obvious that we are in the community, and you see us on our social media. Most importantly, you see our students working in our business and industry.”
Giving back to the community in the form of skilled workers, English said, is moving the economy forward. SCC refocused its efforts to workforce development and the one college model, where students earn stackable credentials.
English explained that growing the partnerships with Columbus County Schools and Whiteville City Schools contributed to the increased enrollment. Through the Career and College Promise program, high school students are earning certificates, diplomas or associate degrees.
“The most significant increases in enrollment came from continuing education with a 114% increase,” English said.
Due to English’s close relationship with former commission chair Ricky Bullard, English said their constant communication led to Bullard presenting the proclamation.
“After learning the news of our 37% enrollment increase from our annual board retreat and from reading in the newspaper, Ricky wanted to do something special for the college on behalf of the commissioners,” English said. “I told him that it wasn’t just about me, but it was really our individuals in leadership at the college. That’s why we took a really good group with us.”
Accompanying English at the commissioners meeting to accept the proclamation were:
- Kaylie Simmons, Director of Marketing and Communication/Public Information Officer
- Jason Strickland, Chief Information Officer
- Elizabeth High, Dean of Student Learning and Innovation
- Dr. Mike Ammons, Dean of Technical Training
- Brenda Orders, Dean of Business Careers and Training
- Colene Faulk, Dean of Student Services

- Dr. Brandon Jenkins, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer
- Kim White, Director of Human Resources
- Terrie Priest, Executive Director of SCC Foundation
- Angie Ranson, Associate Vice President of Education and Training
- Jessica Hill, Dean of Nursing and Healthcare Training
The proclamation states that “Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Columbus County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize and commend Southeastern Community College, President Chris English, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students for their dedication and contributions to the advancement of our community.”
