SCC launches new Heavy Equipment Operator Training program, starts this spring
Southeastern Community College is set to launch its Heavy Equipment Operator Training program, starting Jan. 12 and running through May 14. Dr. Mike Ammons, Dean of Technical Training at SCC, said the program aims to equip students with the skills needed to operate various heavy equipment in this high-demand career field.
The program begins with initial safety training before moving on to hands-on operation of excavators, bulldozers and skid steers. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are well-prepared for the demands of the industry.
“They’ll learn how to grade land, dig holes, push down trees and all the safety procedures that go along with that,” Ammons said. “They’ll use the excavators for two months, the bulldozers for two months and the last month will be using the skid steers.”
Ammons said there is a high demand for skilled heavy equipment operators, and this program addresses the shortage of new talent in the industry. Instructor Joey Bullock, who has over 20 years of experience, will lead the training.
“There is a need for this program so that we can train the next generation of heavy equipment operators,” Ammons said. “Most of the current operators in this area are getting older, and we’ll need to train new guys to replace them.”
Due to the high cost of equipment, SCC will initially rent the necessary machinery. However, the goal is to purchase equipment as the program grows. Ammons said that training will take place on college-owned acreage near SCC’s baseball field.
The 15-week program consists of 528 hours of training, held Monday through Thursday. Students will receive OSHA 10 certification, with potential future additions of NCCER and Flagger certifications, Ammons explained.
Graduates can look forward to entry-level jobs in construction operating machinery, a high-demand skill set with the potential for high pay. Efficient operators can earn up to $50-$75 per hour, Ammons said.
The program aims to develop beginner skills for job readiness over the full spring semester, with 8-hour daily sessions including one-hour lunch breaks. Industry partners are invited for student interviews and sponsorships, and a certificate will be issued upon program completion.
Financial assistance is available for program costs, and employer sponsorships are also an option. The program falls under short-term workforce training, making it accessible to a wide range of students. Visit this website to register for this class!
