SCC to host ConsuLab’s Tesla car trainer in east coast tour event
In partnership with Cutaway Creations, the next stop on the ConsuLab Tesla trainer tour is Southeastern Community College on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. During this tour stop, automotive instructors and industry partners from across southeastern North Carolina will get hands-on experience with EV-powered vehicle training equipment.
SCC Automotive Systems Technology Instructor Johnny O’Connell explained that ConsuLab engineered its Tesla trainer from cutaways of a Tesla car. He said the tour stop will bring many area instructors and industry partners to SCC, and they will see the college’s Automotive Systems Technology department in action.
“The Sept. 19 event is designed for instructors to really check this thing out, put their hands on it and see if it is something they would like to use in their classrooms,” O’Connell said. “With gas-powered vehicles, our students are practicing their repair skills on used cars. With the Tesla trainer, this is thing is totally set up for learning.”
O’Connell said he is looking forward to testing out the Tesla trainer and seeing if it is a worthy investment for SCC to pursue. Automotive Sytems Technology Instructor David Higgins said he is looking forward to seeing all the other cutaway trainers and seeing how they can be incorporated into SCC’s automotive program.
“We will have several other ConsuLab transportation tech trainers and some of our own cutaways that will be set up for viewing and use,” said Angie Ransom, Dean of Business Careers and Technical Programs.
In addition to the Tesla trainer and smaller trainers, O’Connell said there will be diesel heavy equipment and a diesel heavy equipment specialist on campus to answer questions for people interested in that field.
When O’Connell encountered Cutaway Creations at the SkillsUSA conference in Greensboro earlier this year, O’Connell said that “got the ball rolling” on setting up SCC on the tour. He said this event and possible purchase of a Tesla trainer will enhance SCC’s future EV program that is “in the works.”
The Tesla trainer will be set up in B-building, room 104, and the other trainers will be set up in Flex Lab 1. For more information, contact Valerie Register at 910-788-6397 or [email protected]
