Whiteville educator begins new role as SCC biology instructor
Southeastern Community College welcomed Allison Rockenbach as a new biology instructor for the fall 2026 semester. An educator from Whiteville, Rockenbach brings classroom experience, a passion for science and previous connections to SCC into her new role.
Rockenbach earned a bachelor’s degree in science education with a concentration in biology from UNC Pembroke in 2013. She later earned her master’s degree in science education with a concentration in biology from UNCP in 2019. Before joining SCC full time, she worked as a science teacher at Whiteville High School, helping students develop an understanding of biological concepts through classroom instruction and hands-on learning experiences.
“I chose to work at SCC because I wanted to continue growing as an educator while working with students at the college level,” Rockenbach said.
Rockenbach teaches Biology 110, Biology 111 and Biology 112. She said her interest in the subject developed from a desire to better understand the world around her and the ways living organisms function and interact.
“My interest in biology came from a genuine curiosity about understanding the world around me and how living things function,” Rockenbach explained. “I have also always enjoyed the hands-on side of science, especially being able to explore concepts through labs and experiments. I love that biology allows me to combine curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning, and I enjoy sharing that experience with my students.”
Her connection to SCC began before her full-time appointment. Rockenbach served as a science tutor at the college in 2020 and later worked as an adjunct instructor during the 2025-26 academic year. Those experiences paved the way to a full-time instructor position.
A typical day for the Rockenbach starts with morning office time, where she prepares for her biology lab or lecture course. During her office time, she responds to emails, develops future assignments and course materials and then prepares for her evening class. Rockenbach prioritizes organization, planning ahead and staying well-prepared for her students.
“I also really enjoy the college environment and being able to share my love of science with my students,” Rockenbach said.
Rockenbach became an instructor because of her enthusiasm for science and her desire to inspire that same interest in her students.
“I hope to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to succeed,” Rockenbach explained.
Outside of the classroom, Rockenbach enjoys staying active and makes it a goal to walk at least two miles each day. She also enjoys thrifting and searching for unique finds. A Whiteville native, she is married to Paul Rockenbach, and they have a daughter, Sadie. She attends Western Prong Baptist Church.
As a former tutor, adjunct instructor and now full-time instructor, Rockenbach’s journey at SCC has come full circle. Rockenbach is looking forward to helping students explore biology and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.
