Veronica Powell appointed Associate Dean of Transitional Studies and Prison Education at SCC
Veronica Powell, a Lumberton native, was promoted from Director of Transitional Studies to Associate Dean of Transitional Studies and Prison Education at Southeastern Community College. Starting her new role on Jan. 5, Powell is tasked with building a stronger relationship with Columbus County’s two prisons: Tabor Correctional Institution and Columbus Correctional Institution. Her goal is to create and maintain new classes taught at the prisons, grow the current high school equivalency diploma program at SCC and the prisons and knock down barriers to student success.

SCC tops new transportation technology building with signed steel beam
The cold weather did not stop history and progress being made at Southeastern Community College as state representatives, trustees, college leadership, architect and construction representatives, instructors and staff signed the final steel beam for the Transportation Technology/STEM Building on Jan. 27. The topping ceremony marked a significant milestone in the completion process expected by October this year.

SCC honors Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteerism and celebration service
Southeastern Community College partnered with Facts of Life Church’s food distribution center in Tabor City for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event on Jan. 21. SCC provided volunteers to unload trucks, make food bags, break down boxes, restock shelves and load vehicles with food. The idea for an MLK Day of Service started with SCC’s Dean of Student Services Colene Faulk and was put into motion by SCC’s Student Engagement Coordinator Katie Floyd.

SCC responds to statewide ‘childcare crisis’ with short-term Classroom Ready Academy beginning Feb. 5
Southeastern Community College is gearing up to battle the childcare crisis in North Carolina with the newly established Classroom Ready Academy that runs Feb. 5. through Feb. 19. This completely free academy creates a pool of certified childcare workers ready to meet the needs of childcare providers in Columbus County. SCC Early Childhood Education instructor Amanda Heath is ready to “hit the ground running” with this statewide initiative to fill childcare centers with qualified staff.

SCC Foundation set to ‘rock the yacht’ at annual spring fundraiser
Get ready to ride the waves at the Southeastern Community College Foundation’s “Rams Rock the Yacht” annual spring fundraiser. Benefiting the RamsFund, this event sets sail at 7 p.m. on March 21 at Union Valley Farm and Vineyard. SCC Foundation Executive Director Terrie Priest promises a casual evening of fun, dancing, food and yacht rock music.

SCC makes home baseball season debut on Jan. 31
Southeastern Community College is gearing up for a winning baseball season as they take on the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Cobras at home on January 31 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. for a double header. This season opener will be Coy Barnett’s first official game as SCC’s new head coach and athletic director, and he is looking forward to a competitive season.

Overcoming barriers – NC Reconnect works to increase adult learner population at SCC
NC Reconnect is helping more adults return to Southeastern Community College and finish what they started. As part of NC Reconnect’s fifth cohort, SCC is focusing on learners ages 25 to 44 by pairing outreach with real, practical support. Through regular check ins, encouragement, and help navigating campus resources, Adult Learner and CRM Coordinator Jessica McDowell is working alongside students as they balance jobs, families, and school. From transportation and childcare challenges to internet access and transcript costs, SCC is meeting barriers with solutions, including campus computer labs, bus vouchers, and other targeted assistance. With adult learners already seeing success in programs like healthcare, technical training, and degree completion, SCC is proving that it is never too late to come back and move forward.
