North Carolina Community College Brings Adult Education Opportunities Directly to Residents’ Doors

WHITEVILLE, NCSoutheastern Community College (SCC) has launched a new outreach series to expand access to education after high school by meeting people where they are—literally. The rest of May, SCC employees are visiting a different community in Columbus County, going door to door to share information about career training programs, financial aid opportunities, and upcoming events at the college.

As part of the initiative, SCC team members will hand-deliver bags filled with resources about how adult learners can start or return to college to gain the skills needed for high-paying, in-demand jobs. This effort complements SCC’s Better Skills. Better Jobs. campaign and supports the college’s ongoing commitment to reconnect with adult learners who may have previously started college but didn’t finish—and those who never thought it was possible to begin.

“This outreach series is about more than just sharing flyers,” said Southeastern Community College President Dr. Chris English. “It’s about making sure every resident in Columbus County knows that they are capable of finishing school, and that SCC is here to support them every step of the way—with flexible programs, real career pathways, and the opportunity for tuition-free education.”

Thanks to the NextNC Scholarship, most North Carolinians from households earning less than $80,000 can attend SCC tuition-free—a game-changer for many families and working adults in the region. SCC’s programs—including options like Welding, Truck Driving, and Nurse Aide—offer job-ready training in as little as one year.

This outreach campaign will also highlight two major upcoming SCC events designed to engage the community and help adult learners get started:

  • SummerFest 2025:
Thursday, June 26 | 5:30–8:30 PM – A free, family-friendly event with food trucks, inflatables, music, and more, held at SCC’s main campus.
  • Adult Learner Open House:
Thursday, July 17 | 6:00–8:30 PM – A chance to meet advisors, explore programs, get help with applications, and learn how SCC can support your return to school. Children are welcome.
